Neptune News

Week of January 9, 2006

Congratulations Neptunes – you remain undefeated!  Adding to that excitement, know that we had our first shutout garnering all 11 points!  There were some great swims on Saturday. Several that come to mind include Gina Cossette’s 200 free, Tom Boniface’s 100 back; Paige Brucoli’s 50 back and Zoe Sommer’s 50 free and 50 breast.  Congratulations are also in order for Ashley Emerson who earned a Zone time in the 15-18 Girls 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.88, and Ryan Nasci who got a Senior Boys 50 yard breaststroke Zone time (31.03) off the front end of his 100 breaststroke!  Let’s continue to work hard as we gear-up for Divisionals, Saturday, February 4.

Speaking of Divisionals – I need to know by this Wednesday, if you will NOT be attending Divisionals. The sign-off sheet is on the Neptune’s Info Board (under the sign-off sheet for our next dual meet against Trumbull). Let me say that I hope no one chooses not to attend Divisionals.  We need everyone there in order to do well!  I hate to say that something is mandatory, but this meet is. If you are a high school swimmer and you will be swimming at your high school Sectionals, this does not apply to you, as you cannot participate at Divisionals.  However, there are several non-high school swimmers who MUST swim at our next (and last) dual meet (home against Trumbull, Saturday, January 21) in order to be able to attend Divisionals.  Those swimmers are – Delaney Reardon, Alex Dithomas, Courtney Lilak, Olivia and Brandon Tegey, Billy Arfaras, Emily Diorio and Kyrsti Sowers. Also, know that Divisionals has entry fees (I believe $2 an event).  Once I make the line-up, you will receive envelopes in your mailboxes telling you what you are swimming and the fees due.  Then use that envelope to turn in your fees to me.  That way I can keep track of who has paid.  Also know that the host of Divisionals (Southeast) will have Divisional t-shirts for sale at the meet and a swimsuit vendor will be at Divisionals, as well, in case you need a new pair of goggles, extra suit, etc.  Please plan to be at this meet!  We need everyone’s participation to be successful!

Next Meet News – Our last dual meet of the season will take place at our pool Saturday, January 21.  Please remember to sign-up to bring food for the concession stand!

Banquet News – Our banquet this year will be Friday, March 10 at The Embassy in Struthers.  Please sign-up with the number of people who will be attending from your family on the sign-up sheet now posted on the Neptune Info Board.  This way we will know what size room to reserve.  Know that ticket prices for the banquet will be around $12.  The final cost will be posted soon.  Also know that we hold a Chinese Auction at the banquet with the money raised going towards the team.  We ask that each family donate one item to be auctioned off during the banquet.  Items donated in past years included everything from money cash certificates, swim towels, toys, bath gift baskets, restaurant gift certificates, gift cards to Wal-Mart, Target, Old Navy, etc. and some families go together to bring in larger items.  We’ve had MP3 players, Speedo swim bags, and even a TV in the past!  At the banquet, we sell tickets for the raffle; I believe it usually is 5 tickets for a dollar or an arm’s length for $5 – something like that.  All I know is that it is a great deal of fun!  Plan now to attend the Neptune Swim Banquet where we honor the swimmers, parents and coaches for providing yet another great year of competitive swimming!

Practice Cancellation – If we cancel practice due to the weather, we will do so by 3:00 p.m. that day. Check your local TV stations’ (WKBN, WFMJ and WYTV) to see if we have cancelled practice. We will ask that it be included in the cancellation strip that runs across the bottom of the screen.  You can also call the Y after 3:00 p.m., but check your TV first.

Presidential Invitational Info

Presidential Invitational – Sign-up sheets to work are now posted and meet information will be in your mailboxes soon for the Presidential Invitational to be held at Youngstown State University on Sunday, February 19.  Remember, this is an invitational, meaning you must enter yourself; choose your own events and pay entry fees!  The only thing I, Coach Sue, will do is make up relays based on who is planning on attending the meet.  The rest is up to you.  When making out your entry, mark if you would like to be considered for relays, but do NOT include relay entry fees with your individual event fees due.  Once I make up the relays, I will hand out envelopes of relay fees due at the meet.  All entries are to be turned into Coach Sue. The entry deadline is included with the meet info. Do not call me on the phone and tell me what you want to swim!  Do not just fill out your entry and tell me your parents will pay later.  Entries and fees must be submitted together or they will not be accepted!  Remember, everyone on the team is eligible to swim at this meet; regardless of how many dual meets you swam this year!  This is also our team’s main fundraiser, so all Neptune parents MUST work at this meet!  If you have any questions about this, please contact Tom Nasci at 330-759-0223 or Melanie Emerson at 330-427-2946.

Advertising - Also, we are encouraging everyone to place or get one ad for our meet program. Promote your business, surprise your swimmer with some encouragement in print, thank someone in a big way – place an ad!  Deadline to have ads in is February 10.

Presidential Invitational Concession Info:  For those who haven’t had the chance to go our Presidential Invitational, we can expect about 1800-2000 people throughout the day.  We of course have to provide food for them.  Last year we were only able to have “individually wrapped” ready for resale products, due to “bake sale guidelines” set forth from YSU.  This of course is challenging and takes a lot of planning to spend our money wisely and still be able to offer what we need.  YSU may allow us to “work” out of their concession stand, sell our own products and they may allow us to offer at least hot dogs, pizza, nachos/cheese and coffee. The rest is up to us to buy and bring and set up.  We are asking for a donation of $10.00 per family to supply the concession stand.  The profits earned here help to defray the cost of many things we do through the year that keep swim team fun for our kids, one of them being their team gift that they receive at the famous Swim Team Banquet.

We have started our collection (cash or check made payable to Y-Neptune’s)   You can give to Kathy Lavorini, Sharon Velasquez, or Melanie Emerson or

Mail to :  Kathy Lavorini  2890 Lee Lynn Ct,  Poland, Oh 44514.  Thank you in advance!!!!!
