HEALTHY VALLEY SUMMIT 2012

Thursday, May 17, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Kilcawley Center, Youngstown State University

We are part of PHC OHIO (Pioneering Healthier Communities) which is bringing three knowledgeable speakers on obesity to Youngstown State University. The goal is to provide area leaders the information needed to change the course of this epidemic in our youth.

The registration deadline is May 11. There is a $10 Early Bird discount for those registered before April 30.

SPLASH!

Monday through Friday, June 4-8
Central and Davis branches

Summer means outdoor time and fun-in-the-sun. It's also a time when many children are around water - pools, lakes and the ocean. The SPLASH! program is designed to teach safety near and in the water for children ages 6 to 12. This is a free program that is open to the community.

Registrations can be made for either branch at either branch or on-line.

Central SPLASH! times are 6:30 to 7:30 pm.
Davis SPLASH! times are 6:00 to 7:00 pm.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Friday, July 20 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and Monday through Friday, July 23-27 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Become "Whistle Worthy" and become a YMCA Lifeguard! You must be 16 or older and pass the Physical Competency Requirements (to be performed on the first day of class). Training is held Thursdays & Fridays 5:00 - 8:30 pm and Saturdays & Sundays 12:00-5:30 pm. All classes must be attended.

    Physical Competency Requirements
  • Phase 1: Tread water for 2 minutes (legs only); swim 100 yds front crawl

  • Phase 2: Swim 50 yds each of front crawl with head up, breaststroke with head up, sidestroke & elementary backstroke with hands on chest; perform feet-first surface dive in 10 ft of water then swim underwater 15 ft

  • Phase 3: Sprint 60 ft, retrieve object from bottom, tread water one minute (legs only), climb out of pool, perform chest compressions on a manikin, climb into an elevated lifeguard stand; then listen and follow directions from the instructor.

Our annual 5 mile race (yes, walkers are welcome!) is back, again! The race begins at 9:00 am with a Kids Race at 8:30 am.

Leagues are a big thing at the Y. Whether your child is interested in Soccer, Flag Football or Basketball (or ALL three!), we have a place for them! Check out our Leagues page for more information



What's Coming Up at Davis YMCA

SUMMER DAY CAMPS

June 11 through August 24

Our Summer Camps are made up of three different camps: Camp Neehi (ages 3-5), Camp Curiosity (ages 6-10) and Day Camp (ages 6-13). Below are informational brochures as well as forms that are required to be filled out and returned to the Y before your child attends camp.

Again this year for Day Camp campers, we are offering reduced priced lunches! For $2.50 a day, you can rest easy that your child will have a balanced, nourishing meal.Anyone interested in this service must fill out a Summer Camp Lunch Eligibility Form which can be downloaded below or found at the Service Desk. Although we're offering this service, it will still be necessary to pack a few snacks and a couple bottles (refillable preferably) of cold water.

FASKIDZ RUNNING TEAM

Mondays & Thursdays, April 16 - May 28, 4:45-5:45 p.m.

This is a fun introduction to running for youth 8 to 13 years of age. Led by Y professionals with decades of running and racing experience, this program focuses on training basics with attention to proper intensity, form, injury prevention and running and racing strategies. Participants will train to compete in the Memorial Mile on May 28th (entry is included). The Jock Stop sponsors the Team and provides a team shirt.

Practices are held on the Hike & Bike trail in Mill Creek Park (Rt 224 to Shields Rd). We meet at the gravel lot on West Golf Course Dr across from Mill Creek Golf Course. Come dressed to run and bring a water bottle.

The Blue Team meets from 4:15 to 5:15 and the Silver Team meets from 5:30 to 6:15.


SPRINT DISTANCE TRIATHLON

Sunday, May 13, 7:30 a.m.

REGISTRATION ENDS AT 5:00 PM THURSDAY, MAY 10TH!

The Davis Family Y and the Steel Valley Triathlon Club joined forces once again to bring you an exciting experience. Congratulations to everyone - from the winners to the first-timers!
